Karen Kennedy - Line Dance Teacher
I have been a Fully Qualified Line Dance Teacher since July 2008 after being made redundant after working in a factory for over 24 years. I left the factory on the Friday and on the Saturday I sat the last exam with BWDA to become a Fully Qualified Line Dance Teacher. By August 2008 I was asked if I would start a class in the Downfield Football Club in Balgowan Ave, Dundee when people found out I was now a fully qualified dance teacher. Before that I also had a small Beginners class in Fintry Mains Sheltered Housing Complex and soon I started to add other Sheltered Housing Complex's to the list of places where I was teaching. Many of these were with Dundee City Council and even to this day I still do Tullideph Sheltered Housing on a Thursday evening. A lot of these classes were done through the Open fund which helps older groups to have access to dance classes closer to home or in many of the complex's attached to these schemes. In July 2016 I will be teaching for 8 years and my classes are now done in the evening due to working full time with my main job as a Home Help. The Monday class is my biggest class and the one which has been the most successful and is still running today with a Wednesday evening also being added as a extra class where Beginners can learn more of the basic steps so they can take a bigger part in the Monday class which is mixed. I love to see people enjoy the dancing and it is a great way to get fit with many doctors recommending Line Dancing. There has even been a few University Studies done with one study even suggesting that people ditch the gym and take up dancing classes as it ticks all the boxes. Apart from keeping fit it also has a great social side to it as you interact with other people and many have made new friends by coming along to a dance class.
There is also another side to my line dancing that many are maybe not aware off. I have Choreographed many dances which can be found on many internet sites. YouTube is a great source where you can find many of my dances which have been put onto video and my dances are done all over the world. Copperknob and Line Dancer Websites are also a good source to find any dance scripts you maybe looking for. My big hit was a dance called Good Time Girls and one video by Jenny Brown has had over 280,000 views and at the last count this dance had over 50 video done to it in many different languages. My newest dance is one called Temple Bar and in the short time since it has been released the dance video had over 7,000 views. I have also been asked to take part next year at a Workshop for the Line Dance Foundation in Glasgow in March 2017. I am also hoping to take along some of my dancers that day so they can see the other side to the dancing as many have never been to a social or a workshop.
So that is some of who I am. If you would like to come along and try out the dancing then please feel free to get in touch. My classes are friendly and everyone mixes. All levels are catered for and Beginners are taught the basic so they can move up to other levels. When I started Line Dancing back in 1996 I had some of the best Line Dance Teachers in Dundee who all taught the basic steps but when I started dancing I would say it was easier as we were all Beginners at the same time. Now a days there are more levels so for a Beginner to walk into a class that is already established can be hard so its important that we do not forget that Beginners also need time to learn. I would like to think that I am passing on what I was taught and you should never think you are above dancing with people who need extra time to learn. We were all there at one time and I can remember taking part in a demonstration in the city square and being taught a dance called One Step Forward. I could not get my feet around this dance when I first started dancing so I never belittle anyone who is struggling with a dance. No one is perfect and my class like nothing better when even the teacher has gone wrong or has a complete mental block. I have so many dances in my head that even I sometimes get them mixed up or cannot remember when the tag or restart comes in. As I said the other night I know it when the music comes on. Dancing is fun and is a great stress reliever after a hard day at work. Come along and join in the fun. Quite a few dancers who have not danced for a few years are starting to come back and are loving that the dancing is now done to many different types of music. While country music is still used you can also find yourself dancing to music from the top 20.
